Understanding the many benefits of straight teeth

Posted by Dr. Sharleen Tan, 2017-02-14

Well aligned, straight teeth do more than simply help a person bite, chew and speak effectively.  Straight teeth also contribute to healthy teeth and gums.  As well, properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems including sleep apnea, snoring, chronic jaw pain and headaches.

Straight teeth help reduce disease, decay, and injury

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, gum disease and injury. Straight teeth collect less plaque which is a colorless, sticky film composed of bacteria, food, and saliva.  Decay results when bacteria in plaque feed on the carbohydrates (sugar and starch) that someone eats or drinks which then produce acids that can cause cavities.  Plaque can also increase the risk for gum disease.  When teeth are properly aligned, and less plaque collects, the risk for cavities and gum disease is reduced.

Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and less prone to injury

When teeth are well aligned, they are in turn, easier to keep clean.  Upper teeth that are projected outward are also more prone to being broken even during a simple fall.  When repositioned and aligned, these teeth will have a decreased risk of fracture.

Ignoring Orthodontic problems is never the right strategy

Left untreated orthodontic problems may become much worse, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, destruction of bone that holds teeth in place, as well as difficulties with chewing and digestion.  Orthodontic problems can also cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces and misalignment of jaw joints, which can lead to chronic headaches.

Orthodontists can help straighten teeth and prevent serious problems

Treatment, as early as possible by a certified orthodontist to correct a problem often ends up being less costly that the restorative dental procedures needed to treat more serious problems later in life.

Straight teeth help with self-confidence

Besides the many health and lifestyle benefits to straighter teeth and jaws, straight teeth can also improve self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-image.  Having a positive view of yourself is important at every age!   As Orthodontists, we often see patients’ self-confidence grow as their orthodontic treatment brings the teeth, lips, and face into proper proportion and function. This can also benefit social and career success as well as improves a person’s general attitude toward life!
